More:
The Open Directory Project (ODP or OD), aka Directory Mozilla (DMOZ) and formerly known as Gnuhoo and Newhoo, is the largest human edited directory in the world (currently over 3 million listings).
It is open-source, meaning that anyone can use its data on their own site for free, as long as they follow the license agreement.
All editors are volunteers (tens of thousands of them), and if your favourite topic has no editor, I suggest you volunteer.
Who Uses it?
There are MANY sites which use ODP data
including Google, Lycos, Hotbot, Netscape, and AOL. You can even use it on Fagan Finder. The directory is currently owned by Netscape, which is owned by AOL Time Warner, however it still remains open-source, and (relatively) unbiased.
Some of the websites which use ODP data include their own enhancements. The Google Directory lists pages based on PageRank
instead of in alphabetical order. IncyWincy provides direct access to search engines that are on pages listed in the directory.
iBoogie displays ODP data in a folder-tree format, WebBrain displays the data in a dynamic hierarchy, and Antarti.ca displays the data as a map of Antartica at Map.net.
