Reading my psychology textbook, I just came across the word meme. That would be the first time I've seen it outside the blogosphere.

Visual Cognition Lab - Demos and Stimuli - a video similar to the one I saw in psychology class today is shown on that page (labeled as "Sustained inattentional blindness -- selective looking" under the " Inattentional Blindness Examples".

The experiment works like this: carefully count the number of times during the video that the white-shirted players pass the ball. Then watch it again, not focusing on the white players, and you will understand the "trick". This won't work on everyone all the time.

Electronic paper reaches video speed: Colour movies might soon be playing on single sheets. - saw this yesterday but just read it this morning. I am interested in "electronic ink and paper," and apparently Philips Research has managed to do both animating (much faster frame rate), and gradient, full colour. Presumably they'll have animation and colour together soon. Will look for more on this later. Via Dave Harris.

Google Directory - Health > Occupational Health and Safety > MSDS - when I have the time (i.e. never) I should make an easy MSDS (material safety data sheets) lookup tool.

Gary and others mention Google's new Search by Location; however I haven't noticed anyone point out that this is probably using code or at least ideas from Geographic Search (Google cache if unavailable), the winner of the Google Programming Contest some time ago.

Upcoming.org - I haven't checked it out yet, but from what Matt Haugley has to say, I can really understand what people mean when they talk about the next generation of social software tools. Blogs, wikis, chats, forums, etc., etc., are just the very beginning. Via Stewart Butterfield on Many 2 Many.

New Zealand News - Technology - Prying Google seen as a risk - I am sooo sick of articles like these. When will people realize that if they put something on the Internet, anyone can see it. You can even prevent search engines like Google from indexing your website in a process that takes about one minute, once. I am no Googlepologist, but please, stop blaming Google for you displaying your private information online.

It isn't unusual for my websites to get occasional visits from NIPR.mil (i.e. any military computer; see previous link for info), but it is interesting to note that someone from that address found my blog today by querying Google for terrorism "mpg file".

Fun with fusion: Freshman's nuclear fusion reactor has USU physics faculty in awe - I don't really see how I could have possibly not linked to this. (As a side note, my Earth Science professor mentioned Yellowstone today, which I blogged about recently). Via Blogdex. And why not link to some Wikipedia articles: Nuclear fusion and Philo Farnsworth. The latter could use plenty of work.

A monster awakens? - this story (via Metafilter), about the possiblity of the supervolcano in Yellowstone National Park erupting caught my interest more than usual since I am now taking an Earth Science course in university. Anyhow, to verifty the claims from the article, I wandered over to What's New at Yellowstone Volcano Observatory?. The informative page has science, rather than the sensationalism of the article I linked to. Read both and compare. Note that the people at the YVO may have their own biases too.

Update: - I created the Geology channel on the Internet Topic Exchange and posted this there.

Don Park's Daily Habit - Don is really getting into the merging of blogs and wikis, which is very much to my liking. That blog-wiki software I was going to make last year never happened, and won't, but the existing stuff is probably excellent.
